Our Distinguished Careers

"There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise."

"My name is Tulsi Patel and I am currently a second year pharmacy student at Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University. I’m currently a Pharmacy School Ambassador, International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation Chair, Marketing Manager for Equal Access Auburn as well as a member National Community Pharmacists Association. Being able to meet such ambitious sisters while at UAB, has always encouraged me to be more involved in different organizations and has helped me grow as an individual. The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority Inc. has given me some of the best memories that I never could have imagined gaining throughout my undergraduate years. I have met some of my closest friends and mentors who still constantly motivate me through pharmacy school as well as gained so many leaderships and communication skills. I have and will always cherish all the relationships and connections made through this school. GO BLAZERS!"

Shivani Patel (Alum)

"My name is Shivani Patel and I graduated from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with my BSN degree in 2017. I am currently working as a Registered Pediatric Nurse at Children’s of Alabama. Entering college as an incoming freshman was intimidating, yet very exciting. Meeting the sisters of Sigma Sigma Rho was such a great thing for me because it allowed me to come out of my shell and make lifelong relationships with sisters that now have turned into family. Each sister is so motivating, ambitious and encouraging in many ways!  Without their support, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. As a sister, I held various positions in the Chapter. I was Sisterhood Chair, Public Relations Chair and I took part in various committees throughout the year. In Nursing School, I also took part in the Student Nurses Association. I am incredibly thankful for all the communication and leadership opportunities that I have been able to take part in through Sigma Sigma Rho and at UAB. I have made some amazing memories throughout my undergraduate career that I will forever cherish!"

"My name is Hinal Patel and I graduated from UAB in 2014. I currently live in Houston, Texas and am a Registered Nurse working at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I transferred to UAB from another university my sophomore year. Being new to Birmingham at the time, I didn't know what to expect but the girls made it truly feel like a home away from home and became my family. They have always been so motivating, supportive and empowering. Being around friends that are so driven and having the privilege to witness and be a part of all the amazing things they accomplish is one of the best parts of this organization. Being a part of Sigma Sigma Rho definitely made my college experience unforgettable. Not only have I gained lifelong friends but also valuable leadership skills and being able to network - within and outside of this organization. It has opened up so many doors, that I am thankful for. As a sister of the Blackout Beta line, I was able to experience what it was like to still be a new sorority on campus and helping it grow into what it is today and being able to experience all the milestones SSR had reached. It's great to see how far the organization has come and all the great things the girls have accomplished so far and it's only the beginning. I have met some of my best friends through SSR and have had some of the best college memories. This was one decision that made my college experience an awesome one and I wouldn't change a thing about it!"

Ramya Nyalakonda

Meet the anchor of the Iota line, Ramya Nyalakonda. She is currently an undergraduate research ambassador, TrailBlazer, honors college ambassador, secretary of Global Community and Leadership Honors Program, vice president of Asian American Organization, a chemistry scholar, an undergraduate research assistant for neurobiology, and of course involved in Sigma Sigma Rho, Sorority Incorporated! Here's some advice from our oh so fabulous Ramya: "If I could give one tip to any freshmen, it would be to get involved around campus. Getting involved has definitely been one of my favorite experiences at UAB. Meeting numerous amounts of people both at UAB and in the community truly shows how diverse and amazing UAB is! There are plenty of clubs and organizations around UAB and I advise everyone to pick and choose various organizations they want to join. All these organizations are like second families to me and I could not be more thankful."

Sara Stoner

"My name is Sara Stoner, and I am a senior majoring in Biomedical Sciences and minoring in Spanish here at UAB. I'm a member of the Science and Technology Honors Program, member of Order of Omega, a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Chemistry, and an undergraduate researcher in the Department of Pathology. My goal is to get my dual MD-PhD degrees and someday become the head of my own laboratory. Sigma Sigma Rho has surrounded me with ambitious women who've supported me through everything and encouraged me to become more involved on campus and reach for my goals. Without my sisters, I don't think I would've gained the confidence to decide that I want to get my MD-PhD!"

Vishwadha Gunda

“Two months, sixty-one days, 1,464 hours of endless practice. Standing behind the curtains in my traditional maroon and amber embroidered dance sari, I peeked out to see all of the dignitaries, dressed in their fancy Indian attire, filling up over three-fourths of the auditorium patiently waiting for my performance to begin. While mentally rehearsing the numerous jathis—fixed dance routines—at the last minute, I could not help but reminisce how I had gotten here.

Nobody would have expected an American raised girl to be dedicated enough to sacrifice her summer full of activities to go to India and train seven hours a day for her Arangetram, the two hour on-stage dance debut as an accomplished professional dancer.” –Vishwadha Gunda

Besides having completed her Arangetram in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, Vishwadha also choreographs to Bollywood and has performed and won numerous awards at highly prestigious conventions such as NRIVA (NRI Vasavi Association), ATA (American Telugu Association), and NATA (North American Telugu Association) and has met a number of both Indian and American celebrities and honorable figures.

Vishwadha is currently a sophomore at UAB majoring in Public Health with a double minor in Business and Philosophy while on the Pre-Dental Track. She is a part of Rangeela, a Bollywood Fusion dance team that empower members of the community and victims of social injustice by communicating their stories through our performances; UAB Blazerthon, a non-profit organization supporting Children’s Miracle Network, and also the Alumni Chair, Sisterhood Chair, and Stroll Chair of Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority Incorporated.
